Visit this unique botanical garden in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. By purchasing your entrance tickets you will not only be able to visit the largest botanical garden in Europe that specialises in palm trees and see the biggest botanical collection of tropical palm trees in the world, but you will also be astounded to see how the former 12-hectare garbage dump site has been transformed into a space for leisure and botanical culture with exceptional views of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
The interesting story of the transformation of the former Santa Cruz landfill site into a botanical garden
What is currently the Palmetum was a garbage dump from the 70s up until 1983, when it was closed.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife owes the transformation of this completely degraded, old landfill into a nature’s paradise to an agricultural engineer who was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about palm trees.
Although works on the Palmetum began in 1996, it wasn’t open to the public until January 2014.
This, in itself, is a great enough reason to visit it.
Visit the world’s largest collection of tropical palm trees in the Palmetum of Santa Cruz
Your entrance ticket to the botanical garden of the capital of Tenerife enables you to behold approximately 2000 species of plants from tropical and subtropical climates.
Get ready to embark on a journey to Madagascar, the Caribbean or Polynesia through their palm trees, all represented in the Palmetum of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
The Palmetum is divided into bio-geographical sections. During your visit, you will encounter species that are surprisingly very different from the ones you would usually find in a botanical garden, such as the so called ‘pot-bellied’ palm trees.
You can visit the Palmetum on your own, by buying only the entrance ticket. If you prefer to also take a guided tour, add it to your shopping cart too. The sole purchase of the guided visit of the Palmetum does not include the entrance ticket to the botanical garden, which must be booked separately.
