Description of the tickets to the MUNA Museum
Description
Immerse yourself in the Canary Islands’ natural history with tickets to MUNA, the renowned Tenerife Museum of Nature and Archaeology.
MUNA is located in the Antiguo Hospital Civil of Tenerife’s capital city, a building noted for its neo-Classical architecture, which has been refurbished in a way that elegantly brings the exhibition rooms together with the rest of the culture and leisure facilities.
Situated in the very heart of Tenerife’s capital city, Santa Cruz, this museum is a veritable temple for those who love the ‘Fortunate Islands’.
A place where you can see the history and character of the island’s origins, its volcanic nature, and the dramatic fauna and flora which even now is still a feature of the island that is home to the imposing Mount Teide: Tenerife.
The permanent Archaeology and Natural Sciences exhibition displays various information panels and collections designed to be enjoyed by young and old alike.
The Tenerife Museum of Nature and Archaeology allows you to get to know about the natural wealth of the Canary Islands. In addition, you will explore the biggest existing collection of Guanche artefacts, and learn about the mysterious indigenous people who inhabited Tenerife before it was taken over by the Europeans. You will get a close look at archaeological materials and mummified remains that offer a unique vision of the island’s remote civilization.
A stroll through history, starting at the beginning
A ticket to the Tenerife Museum of Nature and Archaeology will give you access to its permanent exhibitions—which will take you on a voyage into the past, focusing on different aspects of the unique Canary archipelago, such as its dramatic formation around 20 million years ago.
Which was the first island? Where did the earliest inhabitants come from? Here you’ll find the answers to these questions and many others!
You will also learn about the burial customs of Tenerife’s indigenous culture through the great collection of Guanche mummies, which are displayed using the latest conservation technologies.
And especially for the youngest visitors, this Tenerife museum offers the opportunity to walk among full-size reproductions of the different species of animals found in the Canary Islands.
Aboriginal mummies, fauna and flora—unique in the world
Two thousand five hundred years ago, the first settlers arrived on the Canary Islands. What were they like? What did they do in their daily lives? What marine fauna did they find in the Atlantic? And what did they find on land? What kinds of animals were there? What species were there?
Giant squid, for example, are a common feature in the area. Do you know what they are? Discover them with these exact replicas of the islands’ fauna. And the same with the flora; did you know that there exist many endemic ecosystems? Broaden your knowledge while having fun!
The origins of volcanic activity
Have you ever wondered how a volcano is born?
Learn all about volcanology on your visit to the Tenerife Museum of Nature and Archaeology (MUNA), and delve into the origins of the Teide volcano, Tenerife’s natural emblem.
Did you know that the Teide volcano is a very rare phenomenon in the world? In fact, it is the world’s third largest volcano, measured from its base on the sea bed.
The exhibition illustrates the formation of Mount Teide and its main characteristics—those features that make it unique and different from all the other volcanoes.
